Residents of apartment want their neighbor or neighborhood provides calm and quite in the apartment complex. Often there will be disagreement between pet lovers and residents who do not allow pets in apartment complex. Some residents feel all pets are nuisance and will harm children or other residents in apartment. Some apartment even will have bye-law which restricts residents to grow or keep any pets with them.

If you are pet lover or planning to buy a pet, you must know the dos and don’ts of your apartment. You have to discuss with your landlord and your neighbor regarding the same. Ensure that you give proper love and care for your pet. Ensure your pet is not disturbed by or disturbs your neighbor. Before you bring or plan to own a pet, you need to consider some basic things.

Things to consider if you have a pet or plan to have.

In some apartment, landlords or association allows pets in their apartment complex. The owner of pet has to take responsibility and care of their pets. Here are some tips or things which need to be considered when moving with pet to an apartment complex.

  • Discuss with landlord or association: Before sign a lease or agreement, discuss or inquire about rules regarding keeping or having a pet in your apartment. Get the permission from your landlord or association in writing before you bring your pet or plan to have a pet for your apartment. Some apartment do not allow pets or certain breeds are restricted in apartments.
  • Ensure that your pet does not cause inconvenience for others by barking constantly, soiling common areas or aggressive behavior. All these can be addressed by training by positive reinforcement and not by punishment. Keeping a dog chained for long periods can lead to aggressive behavior.
  • Type or category: Not all types of pets are allowed in apartment but pets that don’t disturb neighbors in an apartment are often welcomed. Some apartments, especially in cities, will have restrictions on what breeds you can have. There are often breeds that can be considered aggressive or protective.   • Never fool your neighbor or landlord: If you are a pet lover and your apartment rules does not allow you to keep your pet with you, try to get permission from your neighbor or landlord to take care of them. Convince your landlord or neighbor that you take complete responsibility of your pet and it will not disturb neighbors and children in apartment complex. Never try to hide your pet in your apartment and fool your neighbor or landlord telling some lies such as you are watching pets’ video or movie etc. This will result in breach of lease.
  • Proper exercise: Pet lovers treat their pets as one of the family members. Ensure that your pet get proper exercise and healthy food in time. Treat your dog as companion and ensure that it does not inconvenience others in your apartment complex. Ensure your pet is vaccinated once in a year.
  • Do not let your pet free in common areas, this is important for safety of your pet and others in the area.
  • Ensure that your dog is regularly vaccinated against rabies — the modern tissue culture vaccines are good for much longer than one year.
  • Spay or neuter your pet: A spayed or neutered dog is generally more even-tempered and docile. It is also healthier for the dog.
  • Discourage Aggressive Behavior: Treat your dog as a companion, not your security service. Do not train your dog to be aggressive and constantly discourage aggressive behavior. Do not train your dog to “mouth” you by encouraging it to bite (even if gently) your arm.

All pets are not harmful or nuisance for apartment. There are certain breeds or pets which suits best for apartment lifestyle and protect all residents of apartment. Pets are like one of our family member or companion that need proper care and love from its master and people in and around. Pets need to be vaccinated in once a year and its owner must take the responsibility. Proper training and exercise is important for your pets discipline and health. Ensure you follow apartment rules or bye-law relating your pet. Do not let your pet free in common areas.
