Comments re the alarming article which appeared in the Deccan Herald-B'lore (May,28th)

Let's hope & pray that there will be no officially initiated culling of dogs in B'lore. We need to monitor the situation & if necessary take preventive actions!
Anyone who's aware & has some news on this matter, can contact me (yasminedpolomski@live.com). Thanks for your support:-)!!!

Dear Anjali Ji,
Please find mentioned hereunder the feed back from Bangalore.
As regards the ABC programme in the 18 wards of Bangalore, Nine wards ARF=5, CUPA=2 and Karuna=2, Total Nine wards are curently in operation.

Of the remaining nine wards, tenders have been called for and four organisations had applied and negotiations took place on 31.05.2010.

It appears that the organisations have come to an understanding @ Rs.600/dog and Rs.680/ dog for providing additional responsibilities of stationing one vehilce at the BBMP Hqs to meet emergencies.

Now the recommendations have to go from the Commissioner to the Health Sub-Committee and then to the council for awarding the work to the new tenderers.

In all probability, it may take 30-45 days. However the work in the 9 wards is in progress.

Regards,
Yours sincerely,
Dr. R.M. Kharb
Maj. Gen. (Retd.), AVSM
Chairman, AWBI

Dear Friends,
>
> To my knowledge there is no move towards culling of dogs.
>
> In Bangalore - new corporators have been recently elected in every ward
> after a very long gap - these over enthusiastic guys brought up the dog
> issue in the BBMP council meeting - triggered of by the Neelasandra
> Corporator ( under whose jurisdiction the BBMP - Cupa ABC Centre falls ) who
> wants to take over the BBMP land to build a housing colony for the weaker
> sections - in order to gain more votes and public support for himself. This
> has been going on for a very long time by the previous corporators too -
> from time to time they tried to shift the ABC Centre but so far they have
> not succeeded.
>
> In addition, Bangalore as most of you know is also homeground of SDFB (
> Stray Dog Free Bangalore ) - an Anti - stray dog organisation - who keeps
> whipping out anti - stray dog propaganda every now and then.
>
> The Press also loves to play up this anti -dog issue.
>
> The only solution to all this would be formation of a NEW animal group -
> who should actively focus ONLY on promoting ABC and creating awareness and
> also monitor the programme and make the whole system more effective and
> ensure PUBLIC SUPPORT for the prog.
>
> Anyway, as of now, there is no official move or statement by BBMP to start
> killing of dogs.
>
> However we will be alert and watch out.
>
> We really appreciate your support - You have been a great help during the
> 2007 crisis and I am sure we can count on all of you if things go wrong -
> but let us hope that won't be neccessary.
>
> Thanks & Regards

Dear Rukmini,
> I had a conversation with Maj. Gen. Kharb. He mentioned your mail, and told
> me that he in fact had met the BBMP Commissioner, Mr. Bharatlal Meena, a few
> days ago. Mr. Meena confirmed to him that the BBMP shall shortly be issuing
> tenders for awarding ABC contracts. Apparently, he was not as negative as
> Deccan Herald.
>
> Gen. Kharb also confirmed from the Bangalore NGOs that at least 3
> NGOs/shelters are currently conducting ABC programmes.
>
> Actually, the press is playing a very negative role. We need to now start
> handling the press. I have some ideas regarding that, which I shall share
> vide a separate mail.

> Dear Friends
> A couple of years ago, Delhi's animal lovers came together in a sympathetic
> demonstration to protest the culling of dogs in Bangalore. Many of us
> working now in Delhi's animal network came together on account of this
> rally. To some extent therefore, the BLR affair had something to do with the
> solidifying and stabilising of Delhi's core action group. Subsequently, Mr.
> Karlekar wrote a book, exposing the grim goings on behind and under the Blr
> killings. Once again, we are thrust upon by possibly another deathly round
> of killings in Blr. The article in Deccan Herald (link below) is a precursor
> to this, as we know by the way newspapers build up hysteria to whip up a
> collective neurosis. The stray dog picture they have shown is clearly not a
> 'friendly' one - it looks rabid and is possibly photo-shopped. They have
> clearly written that the ABC programme has NOT reduced dog numbers. This is
> falsification of facts and a plan to undermine ABC programmes
> which is the only humane way of keeping canine numbers down. Recently, the
> Udaipur Municipal Corporation was catching dogs in a barbaric way and
> dumping them in the desert without food or water.
>
> Let us be prepared (God forbid) for another episode - overt or covert- to
> happen in Bangalore. I do hope that some such groundswell of cullings does
> not happen in Delhi before the Games. We need to nab the first newspaper
> that starts the 'neurosis building' which I'm sure will begin sooner than
> later.
> Dr. Kharb, could the AWBI pre-empt the situation by writing to the Blr
> Municipal Corporation immediately to ensure that no cullings take place in
> Bangalore?
