VERY URGENT: looking for either a non-kill animal shelter or a new home for Binti

Name: BINTI

Age: two  years old

Gender: Female

Breed: Indian Lab Mix

Health condition: neutered & sterilized. Her vaccinations are up to date.

Personality: very affectionate w/ foster parents but very wary of strangers & other dogs & kids. Very intelligent. Loves to run in the yard (should be enclosed & dog proofed). Loves to sunbath.

History: found abused as a puppy in a village. Currently staying with her foster parents in B'lore.

Remarks: Doesn't get along well with other dogs & kids. She would be a good watchdog provided there are no other dogs, no kids around & she can be kept in an enclosed dog proofed yard. Only suitable for experienced dog lovers!

Contact: Nathalie in B'lore: zaramkv@yahoo.in/9449 024 185/28455403.

My friend Nathalie Anissa Khosla Vucko has rescued & loving fostered for two years Binti. Due to her sad past (Binti has been found abused as a puppy in a village), her personality is complex & she has many issues. She doesn't get well along with other dogs & kids. She would be a good watch dog provided she's in an enclosed dog proofed yard without any other dogs & kids. She would be suitable for an experienced dog lover.

Nathalie is  VERY URGENTLY looking for:

-either a non-kill animal shelter who could take BINTI & help finding her a new loving home without any other dogs/pets and kids

-or someone who doesn't have any other pets & kids willing to adopt her immediately.

Please help us finding a new home for Binti. It is VERY URGENT!!! Thank you:-)

Courtesy: DogSpot

Dear Pet Parents,

The 4th India International Pet Trade Fair 2010 (IIPTF), to be held between February 12 &14, 2010, at the NSIC Exhibition Ground, Okhla Industrial Estate, New Delhi, will be spilling with fun activities this year as it has a different pet event allotted to each day of its 3-day duration. A Dog Obedience competition will be held on February 12, 2010, whereas an All Breed Championship will be organised on February 13, 2010. The last and most looked-forward-to pet events of the fair— to be held on February 14, which also happens to be VALENTINE\’S DAY—will be the Dog & Cat Fashion Shows, in which approximately 150 dogs and 50 cats are expected to participate.

All the 3 pet events will be organised concurrently to the trade aspect of the fair, with
exciting prizes for winners and mouth watering goodies for pet participants! There will be no loud music during the Dog & Cat Fashion Show, so as to not abuse the sensitive hearing of pets present. Also, free backstage grooming will be provided to all pet participants of the Fashion Show. Both the Dog Fashion Show and the Cat Fashion Show will be held separately to avoid any cases of victimisation or bullying (“cat fights”, pun intended) on either side. All pet events will be held from 10am to 5pm every day, whereas the main trade fair will be ongoing, from 10am to 7pm daily.

IMP NOTES:
IIPTF does not discriminate on the basis of lineage. In other words we don\’t care if Poochy\’s great grandfather was Sir P Diddy, The Third or not. Mixed breeds, mongrels, lazy dogs, fat dogs, spoilt dogs, snooty dogs—all are welcome to participate in any or all of the pet events at IIPTF
For purebred participants, documents authenticating their breed are not required but updated vaccine cards are a must for all (even mixed breeds)
For those of you that are shy to enroll your pets because you\’ve never participated in a show before and are scared that your pets' under exposure to the world of dog shows might land you in an embarrassing spot, worry not. You have to show up at 9 am on the designated day, where experienced volunteers will coach you on what to do
Backstage grooming for fashion show participants
First aid team will be on standby
2 people are allowed free entry with pet participant
There will be no loud music for the sake of your pets
Dog Fashion Show and the Cat Fashion Show will be held separately to avoid any cases of “cat fights” between the two species

Say thank you to journalists who support animal welfare issues

Dear All

We have to work towards a better understanding about animal abuse/welfare issues together with the media. Sadly too often, the media likes to report about 'bad incidents' in a wrong & distorted context. We have to show journalists like Priya Menon from TOI, how much it helps the world of animal lovers to have someone within the media who takes the time & effort to report diligently about animal issues & help raising awareness & help spreading the word about animal abuse incidents and/or how wonderful animals can be if treated with love, respect & understanding.

Please join me in this action of gratitude & co-operation initiated by a thoughtful volunteer!

Courtesy: a thoughtful volunteer

"In recent times, whenever there has been an act of cruelty to animals, the Times of India (mainly Priya Menon) has given the incident due coverage whereas several other papers have glossed over or totally ignored the incidents. When the dog show resulted in a dog's death, TOI covered it two days in a row (this rarely happens in media these days) and went so far as to call animal people and ask them to write in to keep the story alive.

When St.John's school killed 20 dogs last week - they rounded them up and stuffed them in gunny sacks, beat them black and blue and then injected them with poison while they were writhing in agony- only Priya covered this article. We need the media to cover these issues or we'll end up losing the battle the next time around as well.

Please write to priya.menon@timesgroup.com immediately and thank her for covering the issue: please mention that TOI was the only paper that bothered to take a compassionate stand - the email goes to her editor automatically and he/she will help us the next time we need coverage. All other papers have ignored the killings. This is going to set a bad precedent and the next thing we know, every dog in this city will face the same risk.

Please take 2 min to do this and try and tell everyone in your circle to write to Priya as well. Please ensure that between us, we manager to send at least 100 letters by tomorrow congratulating them for ethical journalism."
Thanks:-)!

Over a dozen stray dogs killed at school

Priya M Menon | TNN

Chennai: More than a dozen stray dogs were brutally killed on the grounds of St Johns International Residential School, on the outskirts of Chennai, last week. The incident has shocked animal welfare activists who are demanding action against the culprits.
The dogs were beaten and then injected with poison, says Chinny Krishna, chairman, Blue Cross of India, who was received an anonymous tip. We contacted the school and they assured us that the killing would be stopped but by then about 28 dogs had been killed.
School authorities, while admitting to the massacre, blame the incident on general manager V Christo Packiadurai. There were instances of dogs biting children and parents were concerned, says Professor Chelliah , principal of St Johns International . But before we could think of a safe method of removing the dogs, Christo took action. The grounds of the school houses two institutions St Johns International and St Johns Academy. About 1,000 students live on campus in an area outside the city limits on National Highway 7. According to Chelliah, dog catchers from the local panchayat were summoned without the knowledge of the management. There were no senior staff on campus as it was a Sunday. Christo had gone to church, says Chelliah.
I rushed to the school when I got to know of the killings. I did not think the dogs would be killed. I thought the animals would be caught and released elsewhere, says Christo, who was terminated from service on January 15. Eighteen dogs were killed and I accept moral responsibility for it. In a letter to the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), he apologised for the incident saying it happened purely out of my ignorance and lack of knowledge .
Reports as to how the dogs were killed vary. According to Christo, 18 dogs were rounded up by two dog catchers with gunny bags and injected with poison , all within two hours. It is impossible for even an experienced dog catcher to catch so many dogs; the animals were definitely beaten, says Krishna.
The incident has enraged animal welfare activists. Its a crime and swift action needs to be taken, says New Delhi-based animal welfare worker Madhu Goyal. Though AWBI has issued a legal notice, an FIR has to be lodged for the law to take its course. We will be prosecuting the parties concerned under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 and Animal Birth Control (Dog) Rules 2001, says Krishna.

Dear activists: Please take not of the below court order (and attached with signature) in favor of the recent cow case that Pradeep Nath of the Visakha Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (VSPCA) has gotten in light of the custody battle for the sake of the cows and bulls that ensued for the past few months. Activists may find reference to the proceedings and ruling below useful in their own fight for the cows. These new rescued cattle are now safely in VSPCA custody for life bringing our total to more than 650.

Crl. M.P. No.773/2009 in
CC 859/2009
31.12.2009:
Perused the petition. As per the directions of the Hon’ble High Court of
A.P., Hyderabad in Crl.R.P. No. 634/2009 dated 21.08.2009; this petition is
reopened for fresh disposal after hearing both parties.
This petition is filed by the petitioner under sec.457 of Cr. P. C. for return
of cows for interim custody pending trail. Petitioner in this petition contended that
he used to collect the cows from the farmers in and around the surrounding
villages and he has paying huge amounts for them. Due to the seizure of the said
cows the petitioner has been suffering a lot of mental agony to meet his daily
expenses and he undertakes that he will produce the said cows when ever this
Court directed him without fail.
On the other hand, the complainant filed his counter who is President of
Visakhapatnam Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, stating that on
complaint the Station House Officer, of Pothinamallayyapalem Police Station, the
police officials have seized 60 cows from the possession of the accused which are
brought to the GVMC Debris dumping Yard Boravanipalem, by the accused for
slaughtering and were given possession for safe custody to the Society. After
possession of 68 cattle, 8 cattle were died due to disease which was certified by
the Government Veterinary Doctor and out of the 60 cows another 30 cows also
died in different dates in confirmation of suffering with starvation, dehydration
exhaustive injuries, emaciation and the fatally contagious foot and mouth disease,
inspite of the treatment rendered by the Society under the supervision of
Veterinary doctors. They also filed the Certificates of the dead cattle which were
issued by the Veterinary doctor. Further contention of the complainant in this case
is that if the said cattle were handed over to the petitioner, they may be slaughtered
and it is highly difficult for the court to secure those cattle and if the cattle are in
their possession, they will take care of the cattle under the supervision of
Veterinary doctors by providing food, shelter to the cows.
In this petition, the petitioner has not filed any document to show that he
has collected the said cows from the villages near by in order to transport the same
to the shandy. Further the petitioner has not given any guarantee that he will
supervise the cattle by providing sufficient food and shelter. So by considering the
facts and circumstances, of this petition, I hold that it is right, just and necessary to
keep the cattle with the complainant in order to ensure the safety of the cows.
Further the complainant is a welfare organization to maintain large number of
cows of this type.
So by perusal of these facts, I hold that this petition has no merits and it is
dismissed accordingly.

Courtesy: KARMA: DON'T CHAIN YOUR DOG

Courtesy: KARMA

This is a good read ! Please pass on this information to all the pet owners that you know of :-) :-) :-) We might help some doggie, tied somewhere, leading a life of confinement!

A dog treated with kindness and affection is more affectionate & gentle than one that is chained , brutalized or left alone all day. In fact, the practice of confining, chaining, or tying up a dog without social contact for long periods can create viciousness.

Dogs that are chained run a much higher risk of biting. Chaining a dog goes against its natural instincts. Dogs were not meant to be chained. The feel confined, trapped, and it drives them crazy.
The problem of aggressive dogs is often a problem of irresponsible dog ownership. Tethering a dog can have severely negative effects on the dogs psyche. Most dogs who spend a significant amount of time tethered are unstable and anxious animals. Chained by the neck, they exist without respect, love, exercise, social interaction, and sometimes even basic nourishment. They live as prisoners, yet long to be pets.

Would you for one second choose to live the life of these dogs? No matter what reason is given, the bottom line is that it is NOT ok to chain a dog for life. Dogs should not have to live chained or penned as prisoners, yearning for a place in a family, craving acknowledgement, respect, and love. They DESERVE BETTER, and we , as caretakers , have the obligation to provide it for them.

Chained dog is caught in a vicious cycle; frustrated by long periods of boredom and social isolation, he becomes a neurotic shell of his former self—further deterring human interaction and kindness. In the end, the helpless dog can only suffer the frustration of watching the world go by in isolation—a cruel fate for what is by nature a highly social animal. Any city, county, or state that bans this practice is a safer, more humane community.

Please consider today how you can help the dogs in your neighborhood. If you see a chained dog or a penned dog daily, it is time to take action.

Don’t Dump Your Dog

Reasons to NOT Give Up Your Dog

By Jenna Stregowski, RVT,

When you choose to get a dog, you must choose to become a responsible dog owner. Unfortunately, not all dog owners act responsibly, abandoning their dogs when they become inconvenient. The most irresponsible of dog owners will leave them to fend for themselves in a vacant home or chained in a yard. This is tragic and unacceptable.
Sometimes life gets rough and we have to make serious choices. In some cases, that means giving up a beloved pet. However, there are many ways to avoid this. Here are some examples.
I’m moving and my new place does not allow dogs.
Don’t move there. Be diligent and chances are, in time you will find the right place. Try to negotiate the conditions with potential landlords, and be willing to spend extra money. If you absolutely must move right away and cannot find a place that allows your dog, talk to friends and family - someone you know might be willing to take care of your dog for an extended period of time while you search for other arrangements. The same applies if your move is temporary and dogs are truly not allowed.
My dog has health or behavioral issues that are out of control.

Health problems will happen from time to time in people and pets. If your dog has a chronic illness, it is your duty to help manage it. If current therapy is not working, ask for a referral to a specialist or get a second opinion. Tell your vets that you are at the end of your rope and you need help.

With regards to behavior problems: have you heard the expression “there are no bad dogs, only misinformed owners?” This is generally true. Our dogs act the way we train them to act, so a behavior problem is YOUR responsibility. Visit a behaviorist. If you cannot afford this, learn on your own. Talk to anyone who will listen – you may find someone else who has experienced the same problem.
I am having a baby and don't have time for a dog now.
Dogs & kids can actually be a great combination if handled correctly. It is essential that your dog is properly trained and exposed to babies and children before your baby is born. Then, be certain to introduce the baby to the dog appropriately. Plus, you must raise your children to respect dogs! Make sure you include your dog in as many family events, outings and gatherings as possible. If your dog knows his place in the pack - and that includes knowing the children are higher-ranking - you can have a safer, more peaceful family unit. Growing up with dogs is one of the best gifts you can give a child, if done right.
I simply cannot afford my dog anymore.
Learn the cost of dog ownership Make a list that includes your dog’s necessary expenses to determine if this is truly the case. You may find than you can afford your dog after all. To lower long-term expenses, keep your dog healthy. A nutritious diet, regular exercise and preventive veterinary care all play a major role in keeping future costs down. Here are some money-saving tips:
Visit low-cost clinics for routine vaccinations.
Resist the urge to buy extras such as a new collar, dog bed, or bag of treats. Make your own dog bed or ask a friend for help.
DO NOT feed economy dog food to save money. Low-quality diets can cause poor health in the long run.
I have exhausted all of my options and I really cannot keep my dog.
Abandonment is NEVER acceptable. You are responsible for finding the best home possible for your dog. Be sure that you have truly explored all avenues. Millions of dogs are euthanized each year because of overcrowding in shelters, so try not to contribute to that number.
Write up a brief fact sheet about your dog covering details like age, breed, size, color, health, temperament and personality. Be honest about your dog – especially regarding behavior.
Tell all of your friends, family members, neighbors, co-workers and acquaintances that you are looking for a new home for your dog. Explain your situation and the fact that you want to find a great home for your dog. Make sure you check out potential new owners well so your dog does not end up needing a home again.
Tell your veterinarian and staff about your situation, they may be able to help. However, do not drop your dog off for services and fail to come back and pick him up. Never leave your dog on the doorstep of a veterinary office. These are seriously irresponsible acts and are unfair to your dog!

Please, please do not euthanize your dog if you cannot find him a home.

Important note: Pets in abusive or neglectful situations should always be removed and placed in good homes. If you see a dog being treated inhumanely, please take action. Contact your local authorities and/or an Animal Welfare NGO immediately.

Courtesy: Animal People:high time Indian ABC programs instituted quality control for sterilizing dogs

Courtesy: Animal People

>In the past 3 to 4 months I have noticed a considerable number of
>pups in the age group of 2 to 5 months being neutered and left back.

This is precisely the optimal age for sterilizing dogs.

If the surgery is performed by a competent surgeon, in
strictly aseptic conditions, pups of this age normally recover the
fastest, with the least risk of surgical complication.

If sterilization surgery is being done in a half-assed manner
by bumbling incompetents, who make unnecessarily large incisions and
try to compensate for what they lack in surgical precision with
equally imprecise misuse of antibiotics, then no age is the proper
age.

The whole issue here, in short, is not the age of the dog,
but the skill of the surgeon. It is high time that Indian ABC
programs instituted quality control sufficient to exclude the
participation of any veterinarian who cannot complete a castration or
keyhole spay in less than 20 minutes, cannot maintain asepsis, and
cannot suture in a manner that keeps the wound closed.

These are not complicated matters -- if the surgeon gives a
damn about providing effective & humane service.

Courtesy FIAPO: jallikattu turns in to red in the name of vulturel culture

Courtesy: FIAPO

This is the time for all animal activists to respond on brutal sport of 'jallikattu'. what is going in Tamilnadu, in the name of sport and tradition is an issue of concern for animal activists. It is necessary to act immediately and frame a specific road map to stop this brutality against dumb animals. The apex court of India has given specific guidelines to conduct jallikattu without causing any harm to animals. However as we all see these guidelines are repeatedly violated due to lack of will on the part of government of Tamilnadu.
I propose the following action-plan to stop conducting jallikattu in present circumstances:
1.Animal activists and Government of Tamilnadu together should review cultural aspects of jallikattu.
2 The definition of sport in case of jallikattu should be justified with all relevant procedures of other commonly conducted sports.
3..Until the report is ready , the sport should be suspended.
4.The Tamilnadu government must see to upkeep the law with regard to animal welfare without favour or fear.
5.The NGO s in the field of animal welfare should put pressure on the government of Tamilnadu at each level.
6.All NGOs must support and join with AWBI in its fight against jallikattu until justice is done to the dumb animals.
I would like to invite initiatives on this issue from all animal activists.

Donations for Sai Ashram animal shelter B'lore

Courtesy: Mudita Chandra sent a message to the members of Dog Lovers..

--------------------
Subject: Donate buliding material/cash for boundary at sai ashram shelter

Hello Lovelies,

So the gorgeous dogs at Sai Ashram animal shelter have their territorial instincts raging and have been attacking calves and antelopes in the jungle area outside the shelter.

As you may know,Sai Ashram is awesome and distinct in that it allows all of its dogs to roam free. However ,now due to some of our rogues :-) doing this, we have to chain them which is really not cool

We are trying to build a boundary wall, super quick, so that the dogs do not get out and cause more damage.
There are many temples around the area and many Gujjar MLA's residing in the area who are very upset about these dogs attacking calves and would love to optimize this oppurtunity to get rid of the 150dogs at the farm and surrounding area

I would really appreciate any help you could offer in terms of raw material or money.

love and light,

Mudita Chandra

Pledge not to fly kites from glass coated manjha during "Makar-sakranti" festival in Jaipur City

Hello ,

R.A.K.S.H.A. (Revolutionaries Action
Conservation Society For Helping Animals) is a youth based activist
Group/association founded to work for animal rights and welfare of animals. R.A.K.S.H.A. protects
and speaks for all animals from abuse, beating , ill-treatment , captivity of
birds , over-loading and against any cruelty.

Every January Jaipur City
sacrifices thousands of its birds to the thrill of kite- flying festival. The festival
of kite flying is popularly known as" Makar-sakranti", and this
traditional festivity proves fatal for thousand of innocent flying creatures.
Injuries to birds are mainly caused by Glass-coated threads that cut and
entangle to cause fractures, wing cuts and nerve injuries. Birds brought
to the camp have deep cuts and injuries and even glass pieces embedded in their
bodies." With more kites competing for space with birds, the number of
hits has risen over the years. What makes matter worse is that people continue
to use dangerous strings, totally disregarding the harm they cause to the
birds. Now something needs to be done and we think educating the masses and the
classes is the most important aspect to reduce such accidents/death defying
injuries to birds.

We
request / urge the citizens to follow certain DO’S and DON’T’S during the kite
flying festival:

1). Do Not Fly kites
from glass coated manjha. The compassionate solution is not to fly kites at all
or shift to the simple thread without any glass and iron coatings.

2).Always dispose the
left over pieces of manjha in a more careful manner so that the birds are not
able to entangle themselves in the manjha.

3).Do not fly kites
from 6.00 to 9.00AM and 5.30 to 6.30pm as this time is the highest density of
flying birds.

4). Never turn a blind eye
on an injured bird please call us for help.(13th to 15th
January on HELPLINE 98285 00065).

5).Till help arrives, the bird should be placed
in a cardboard box in a warm place, perforated at some places for ventilation.
The bird could be immobilised by wrapping a cloth/bandage gently around its
body. A few drops of water could be put into its mouth or in case of severe
bleeding, glucose could be added to water. Make sure you keep the bird dry and
warm.

6). Learn about basic treatment and handling of
birds at our awareness camp on 9th Jan.(98285 00065)

7).
Please feel free to contact us for the information on basic first aid
for birds injured during the kite flying festival days in your city.

8).Keep ready some empty shoe Boxes with holes on top to
recieve the injuredbirds.

9).Please make sure you do not hurt or scare the bird while catching it as it
creates panic and any hard hands may even result in death of the injured
bird.(as birds are not used to human handling and are very sensitive)

10). Please think
twice before flying a kite that your fun could immobilise/ampute some life
permanently.

11).
Eating sweets and being with your family and friends on the festival can also
be a better way to celebrate the festival. Lets respect life in all its forms.

We cordially invite you
to our upcoming events to reduce cruelty on the innocent birds and help save
our flying friends:

9th Learn basic treatment for birds,
handling, rescue.(1.00-2.00pm Sanganeri Bird Hospital)

11th Join the Awareness drive for a majha
free Makar-Sakranti festival in high density kite flying areas like johari
bazaar, ramganj, badi chopar etc.

13 -15th Join us for Bird treatment camp at Ram Niwas
Gardens Gate, JLN Marg

16th Rehabilitation Program.

Please call helpline or email us if you
you wish to join.

we require volunteers for the
event please feel free to contact our coordinators if you think you have it in

Manjari Mishra | TNN

Lucknow: His last wish could be the best introduction to wildlife
enthusiast and Padma Vibhushan Billy Arjan Singh, who passed away on
Friday night. The 92-yearold wanted that his ashes must be buried in
'Tiger Haven', his sprawling 50-acre farm on the outskirts of the Dudhwa
national park, alongside the graves of his "most treasured friends"-two
leopards Juliet and Harriet Eli, a mongrel bitch and two female
elephants. For the past 60 years, Billy-closely related to the
Kapurthala family-doggedly shunned human company, naturally there was no
reason for him to change his mind at the fag end of the journey.
While women obviously ranked much below in the list of favourites,
his first love undoubtedly was Tara, the tigress he brought home from
Twycross Zoo, London, in 1076 as a cub. Reared by him, she was released
into the wild by Billy when fully grown. There are touching
documentaries to show the man-animal bonds, highlights spanning Tara's
escapades, including his successful experiment with captive breeding.
However, much as the big cat brought her master companionship and
solace, Tara also triggered off a fierce war between Billy and the UP
forest department. Billy's contribution in setting up the Dudhwa
National Park and tiger reserve or Project Tiger would always be
remembered by wildlife lovers.
Billy's fight against hunting put 26 professional shikar companies
out of job. Despite failing health, he had filed a writ in the Allahabad
high court against poaching in Dudhwa. This is apart from a relentless
battle he waged to have the offending railway tracks running through
Dudhwa shifted to ensure its inhabitants a peaceful existence. The only
regret he had was "there was so much needed to be done for tigers and so
little time''. The helplessness provoked him to come up with some of the
best one liners like, "If only they could vote, tigers could have a much
better chance to survive.''

Follow up of Madras HC order banning pets in Residential areas

Dear All

In order to help all animal/dog lovers to get a clearer picture of the recent Madras HC order against pet ownership in Residential areas & its implications, please find hereby some more doc & comments provided by the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organizations (FIAPO).  Please help spreading the word & taking action as the  MHC judgment could become a precedent & consequently have a disastrous impact in the future for our four legged companions & their genuine loving dog/pet lovers/owners!

Courtesy: FIAPO

"Dear friends,

I am attaching a copy of the madras High court order, pertaining to the matter of keeping a large number of dogs as pets. The same was provided by Mr Gopi Shankar from bangalore. many thanks to him.

The important points as understood by me in the order are -

a) The case was of a breeder who had kept 30 dogs for Commercial use. The court had objected to that.
b) he didnt have any licence to keep those many dogs from the local municipal corporation. This law applies in all cities and you can get the licence for a small fees, which most of us dont bother to.
c) He hadnt taken licence from AWBI for breeding & commercial selling of dogs.
d) court asked him to remove dogs because he was commercialially using dogs.
e) media is partly misinforming people of the contents of this order.

because of this commercial use of dogs, other sensitive issues also got highlighted unfortunately -

a) such a nuisance caused due to barking, noise pollution and fowl smell in residential areas, etc.
b) This part of the order has indeed created panic in this state as many genuine pet owners are also facing the consequences.
c) Whereas this order was not pertaining to pet owners, but this judgement has and can be misused to settle scores with neighbours keeping pets.

There are other relevant points in the order which are unfavourable for pet owners.

So something needs to be done to get clarification from Madras H.C. court on the same matter, so it cant be misused further.

Anyone in Madras who has access to good lawyers may contact us for persual of this case. Mrs. Anjali Sharma (lawyer) is looking into the matter in consultation with other bodies, so the matter can be taken up urgently. Any NGO/ AWO working in that region, who are interested in taking this up may also contact us at the emails given below, so a coordinated effort can be made.

Any other suggestions from anyone are most welcome. the order is attached for your critical analysis.

Please share this with all in your network. Basic info. which might come handy in case of need.

Let’s help Animals …!!

Please start helping the animals in need. They need us as much as we need each other!

“The basis of all animal rights should be the Golden Rule: we should treat them as we would wish them to treat us, were any other species in our dominant position.” ~Christine Stevens

Indian constitution in its Article 51-A (g) specifies the importance of kindness to animals. “It shall be the fundamental duty of every citizen of India to protect and improve the natural environment including forests, rivers and wildlife and to have compassion for living creatures.”

The animals are also granted adequate protection under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act 1960 (PCA act 1960), Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 428 and 429, The wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

If we find a street dog being beaten, stoned and harassed or a pet dog being chained with a short leash and not given enough food and water or pets being abandoned, an over- loaded bullock- cart or any other sort of cruelty to any animal; we all have the right to tell the Offenders not to do so. If they insist we can go to the Police / Animal Welfare Organization and register a complaint against the offender and help the animal.

Mistreating an animal is a crime by law (The prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960) and if we, as aware citizens, complain to the police, the offender will be punished.

In case we come across injured or sick animal on the road, we should be kind enough to spare a little time to contact the Animal Welfare Organizations or a veterinarian or a volunteer for help.

To help street dogs, we should adopt the dogs on our streets as community dogs or pet dogs, feed them regularly, get them sterilized and vaccinated.

Animal Birth Control (ABC) program along with anti rabies vaccination (ARV) is the only effective humane method of controlling street dog population and also rabies according to the guidelines given by the World Health Organization (WHO) based on scientific studies. ABC rules 2001 says that street dogs can be picked up only for ABC/ARV and the dogs should be released back after surgery in the same place from where they are picked up..

It has been proved that killing of dogs only resulted in increased population of dogs, as new un-operated dogs will occupy the places of the vacated dogs very soon. So it is wiser to have familiar operated dogs on our streets as our community dogs which will also kill rodents and thus check the diseases spread by rats. These adopted dogs also guard the street from thieves.
