Pledge not to fly kites from glass coated manjha during "Makar-sakranti" festival in Jaipur City

Hello ,

R.A.K.S.H.A. (Revolutionaries Action
Conservation Society For Helping Animals) is a youth based activist
Group/association founded to work for animal rights and welfare of animals. R.A.K.S.H.A. protects
and speaks for all animals from abuse, beating , ill-treatment , captivity of
birds , over-loading and against any cruelty.

Every January Jaipur City
sacrifices thousands of its birds to the thrill of kite- flying festival. The festival
of kite flying is popularly known as" Makar-sakranti", and this
traditional festivity proves fatal for thousand of innocent flying creatures.
Injuries to birds are mainly caused by Glass-coated threads that cut and
entangle to cause fractures, wing cuts and nerve injuries. Birds brought
to the camp have deep cuts and injuries and even glass pieces embedded in their
bodies." With more kites competing for space with birds, the number of
hits has risen over the years. What makes matter worse is that people continue
to use dangerous strings, totally disregarding the harm they cause to the
birds. Now something needs to be done and we think educating the masses and the
classes is the most important aspect to reduce such accidents/death defying
injuries to birds.

We
request / urge the citizens to follow certain DO’S and DON’T’S during the kite
flying festival:

1). Do Not Fly kites
from glass coated manjha. The compassionate solution is not to fly kites at all
or shift to the simple thread without any glass and iron coatings.

2).Always dispose the
left over pieces of manjha in a more careful manner so that the birds are not
able to entangle themselves in the manjha.

3).Do not fly kites
from 6.00 to 9.00AM and 5.30 to 6.30pm as this time is the highest density of
flying birds.

4). Never turn a blind eye
on an injured bird please call us for help.(13th to 15th
January on HELPLINE 98285 00065).

5).Till help arrives, the bird should be placed
in a cardboard box in a warm place, perforated at some places for ventilation.
The bird could be immobilised by wrapping a cloth/bandage gently around its
body. A few drops of water could be put into its mouth or in case of severe
bleeding, glucose could be added to water. Make sure you keep the bird dry and
warm.

6). Learn about basic treatment and handling of
birds at our awareness camp on 9th Jan.(98285 00065)

7).
Please feel free to contact us for the information on basic first aid
for birds injured during the kite flying festival days in your city.

8).Keep ready some empty shoe Boxes with holes on top to
recieve the injuredbirds.

9).Please make sure you do not hurt or scare the bird while catching it as it
creates panic and any hard hands may even result in death of the injured
bird.(as birds are not used to human handling and are very sensitive)

10). Please think
twice before flying a kite that your fun could immobilise/ampute some life
permanently.

11).
Eating sweets and being with your family and friends on the festival can also
be a better way to celebrate the festival. Lets respect life in all its forms.
