"The following was found posted very low on a refrigerator door.
Dear Dogs and Cats: The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Racing me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort, however. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other, stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out on the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is no secret exit from the bathroom! If, by some miracle, I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge in an attempt to open the door. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years - canine/feline attendance is not required.

The proper order for kissing is: Kiss me first, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough.

Finally, in fairness, dear pets, I have posted the following message on the front door:

TO ALL NON-PET OWNERS WHO VISIT AND LIKE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT OUR PETS:

(1) They live here. You don't.
(2) If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. That's why they call it 'fur'-niture.
(3) I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
(4) To you, they are animals. To me, they are adopted sons/daughters who are short, hairy, walk on all fours and don't speak clearly.

Dogs and cats are better than kids because they:
(1) eat less,
(2) don't ask for money ,
(3) are easier to train,
(4) normally come when called,
(5) never ask to drive the car,
(6) don't smoke or drink,
(7) don't want to wear your clothes,
(8) don't have to buy the latest fashions,
(9) don't need a gazillion dollars for college and
(10) if they get pregnant, you can sell their children ..."

This is good news indeed...

Feb. 4, 2010 Hyderabad
"Pradeep Kumar Nath, Founder and President of Visakha Society for Protection and Care of Animals (VSPCA) took the oath to practice law in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Here he is with Mrs. Sarathy, a senior advocate. She has been helping VSPCA with some ongoing and crucial cases.

This is good news as India now has another animal advocate for the law although how Mr. Nath will have time to take cases and run VSPCA will be quite difficult.

Please wish him good luck and blessings to carry forth."

Worrying news...

Killer pit bull terrier is the new pet now

"BANGALORE: There are breeds and breeds of the woofy variety, but for those who love life on the wild side, it's the pit bull terrier. There is a growing fancy for this ferocious dog among Bangalore's dog lovers, though it is known to attack and kill both children and adults.

So much so, that the pit bull terrier is banned in England and some states of the US. Pit bull breeds cannot be reared as pets because of their temperament. The ban came into place after an increase in attacks every year, with a few pets turning on their owners too.

Risks apart, the city's kennels are getting inquiries for the breed. Mohammed Ezra from Ezra Kennels told TOI that buyers of this breed keep them on their farms, and in big bungalows on the outskirts of the city. "Pit bulls are popular as they provide security against dacoits and thieves. Some others like big dogs, and show off this breed."

Ezra points out a pedigreed pit bull terrier which comes at a price tag of Rs 25,000-30,000, and said there are more than 600 pit bulls in the city. In all likelihood, the number should double in less than a year.

SENSITIVE BUT AGGRESSIVE

Parveez Khan, owner of a pit bull in the city, says: "The dog is not as dangerous as it is made out to be. A pit bull terrier thinks just the way a human does, is very sensitive and has to be loved if you want him as a pet. If the dog is kept chained all the time and beaten for no reason, it tends to lose its temperament and turns aggressive."

But what if a pit bull attacks when out on a walk in a crowded public area? "All dogs, dangerous or not, can be taken for walks in crowded public areas if they on a leash,'' says joint director, animal health, BBMP, Parvaiz Ahmed Piren. "If the owner does not bring the pet out on a leash, and there are cases of dog bites or fatalities, the owner will be held responsible."

As these dogs are generally aggressive in nature, they can get angry even at little things, like children trying to irritate them, or not getting enough attention from the owners. The usual victims are children and the aged, as they cannot get away fast enough.

According to Ezra, Labradors are the highest in demand in Bangalore, but pit bulls are also moving fast."

Please help supporting this great initiative & sign the UDAW petition! (www.bluecrossofindia.org>UDAW petition)

On Tuesday, Feb 16, 2010, Dr, Nanditha Krishna and Dr. Chinny Krishna of the Blue Cross of India met with Mr Jairam Ramesh, Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India. They were accompanied by General R. M. Kharb, Chairman of the AWBI, Ms. Justine Holmes of the World Society for the Protection of Animals, and Dr. Abdul Rahman, Secretary General of the Commonwealth Veterinary Association.

Mr. Jairam Ramesh was extremely receptive to the idea of India being a signatory and sponsor of the Universal Declaration of Animal Welfare, initiated by WSPA.

When requested, he immediately agreed to sign the petition. He wrote: “As an Indian, animal welfare is part of my dharma, and it has become my karma now!”

Thereafter, the delegation met Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State for External Affairs, Government of India, and a close friend of Dr. Nanditha Krishna since they were children. He, too, signed the declaration (in his personal capacity), becoming the two millionth signatory!

Stray dogs scare away thieves
Vasundhara Vyas Mehta | TNN

"Ahmedabad: Manjula Shah had a bad cold that woke her up at 4.40 am on Friday. This resident of Usmanpura got up to clear her throat and was annoyed by the stray dogs barking around the housing society.
Irked by the pack of dogs, Shah, 60, who lives on the first floor of Shakuntal Society peeped out of her room window. What she saw shocked her. An unidentified vehicle had come inside the society gate. The car took a round of the plot slowly, then stopped near a car close to the exit gate.
“Two men got off. They had torches and were looking around the place. Then they went close to the car nearest to them and started peeping inside. As they were about to break into the car, the stray dogs started barking. The hassled duo tried to turn them away, but the dogs kept barking. The two men panicked and decided to drive away,” said one of the neighbours.
“This is the dog family that society members have been trying to get rid of. They have even complained against feeding the dogs as they create a menace around here,” said Minal Shah, a businesswoman living in the society.
She added that she stopped feeding the dogs after encountering opposition from neighbours. “I used to do it discreetly. I am glad that people have realised the advantage of keeping them,” she said."

Courtesy: PAWS: Suggestions to help animals with PAWS

Courtesy: PAWS (Nilhesh Bhanage)

Welcome to PAWS! Here is how we work.

Every PAWS Volunteer is, expected to, be effective at the local level and to act as their own organizer getting in touch with other members to carry out programs as needed. PAWS expects your contribution in terms of what you de for animal yourself. Your membership fee / donation only help to spread the message to motivate more people.

Here are some suggestions about the many ways you can help animals:

A) Actual help - Rescuing animals that need help in the city and taking them to a vet. Start a campaign called Adopt an Indian Dog. Set an example by taking a dog from the street into your own home. If one in 50 people adopted an Indian dog, there would be no street dogs left to suffer so miserably.

B) Demand copies of the animal laws pamphlet from PAWS office & translate it in to the local language and then give it to the police and to as many people as you know so that people can start taking action against cruelty.

C) If there are any schools with mini zoos in them these have to be closed down as it is illegal to keep animals in schools. If there is any zoo being run check the state of the animals and then contact the director and adopt the zoo, make better enclosures, see that the animals are fed and kept properly and that there is a doctor.

D) Give grain and water to the birds daily. Put out cooked rice, bajra or chana in your lawn/balcony or rooftop along with a bowl of clean water. Stop eating meat as each meat-eater is responsible for the murder of 300 animals a year in the most cruel fashion. Don't patronize circuses, zoos or other forms of "entertainment” that, exploit animals for profit.

E) Teach people simple first aid. Hold classes with a vet and show children what to do when they come across an animal in trouble. You can get books First Aid For Animals (Rs 60) and Natural Health For Your Dog (Rs 75) from Sterling Publishers Pvt. Ltd, Sterling House, L-10 Green Park Extension, New Delhi-110016.

F) Plant large numbers of bird-friendly fruit and shade trees so that birds have something to eat and nest in.

G) You can stop people from throwing their food leftovers in plastic bags as many animals, including cows, eat the plastic and die.

H) If you have not made a group, give donations to animal welfare groups that are working with animals.

I) Catch & Report people who sell wild animals or birds to the police and see that the animal/bird is released back into the wild. Under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 the offender has to be jailed for not less than 5 years and fined. Make small groups that regularly go to markets and see if wild animals or their parts are being sold.

If you see birds or small animals such as mongoose/snake/lizard sold, confiscate these immediately and have the seller arrested. Birds are often smuggled through the trains. Inform the stationmaster that if you catch any consignment of birds you will put a case on him. Put a poster in the railway station 3aying that any information regarding any bird loading on the trains will be monetarily rewarded. Make friends with the loaders. Also keep an eye on the bus-stops.

J) There are many horses/camels and donkeys that need medical help. PAWS can organize weekly / twice weekly camps at a fixed place so that owners can bring their animals for treatment or you can take a vet, medicine and food to tanga stands / stables area-wise every week

K) Since Dissection has been banned for each school as per the order issued by the CBSE, it is important one group visits schools informing the principal and the students. Failure to do so can lead to contempt of court. Enclosed is the order & list of the alternatives. Some states have not banned dissection in their schools. However under the court orders, these dissections have to be made optional.

L) Milkmen give their cattle oxytocin injections. These are extremely painful for animals and the milk is very harmful for humans. It is illegal under the Food and Drug Adulteration Prevention Act to give these injections. Find out from the milkmen and then inform the po1ice and the people buying the milk and have the dairy closed down.

M) Make sure that no cattle are loaded onto trucks. Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act & Rules No trucks can carry any animal unless they have a permit from the Animal Welfare Board in Chennai or its representation. Any truck without this permission can be confiscated. Even with permission the truck cannot carry more than 4 cows and 2 calves. It must have a first-aid kit, enough food and water for the journey and a medical certificate for the animals. No cattle can be taken across state lines for the purpose of slaughter.

N) Animals such as cattle and horses are kept very badly in the villages. You can hold village camps for giving medicine and educating the villagers on how to load the animal and how to keep it well. Dogs in villages often have mange or fleas. These can also be easily treated. Tie up with the local animal husbandry department and have one camp a month.

O) Madaris / kalandars with monkeys, bears, snakes, and mongooses are breaking the Wildlife Protection Act and the Beggary Act. Have them arrested under both Acts and take the animals away. Monkeys and bears will have to go to a shelter / zoo, and snakes and mongooses can be released at once in a wooded area after proper treatment.

Update on the dog feeding matters - please read the trailing mail, and the attached Guidelines. The Guidelines have been accepted by the Court (in Delhi), and can be used in dispute situations (pages 2 & 3).

The Court had studied the attached Guidelines framed by the Board, and filed by us. They were accepted in entirety. However, since in the 6 colonies to which the petitioners before the Court belong - Saket, Vasant Kunj, Kalkaji, Geeta Colony, Neb Sarai, Shastri Nagar - dispute situations had arisen out of the feeding of dogs, the Court directed the AWBI to actually designate spots in those colonies within 6 weeks, in accordance with the Guidelines for the feeding of dogs.

What is pertinent is that the Court has made it clear that the AWBI is to have final say. The aspect of consultation with the RWAs, area SHOs, etc. no longer finds mention in the order. After designating spots, the AWBI is simply to share the information with all concerned, including the RWAs and area SHOs. The Court has also suggested that boards be put up by the AWBI at the designated dog feeding spots - as many as are necessary - so that the residents feeding dogs at those spots are not harassed by anyone.

The matter is next posted on the 10th of May, 2010. On the next date we shall try for additional observations : that feeding in front of one's own house, or the house of a resident who doesn't object to feeding, cannot be objected to by anyone else.

When the Court order is available, I shall circulate the same.

Dear friends,

On Feb 04 2010, while i was driving past Dwarka (Delhi), i saw a small crowd of people protesting in the middle of the road. Minutes before someone had accidentally seen a piece of a dead cow falling off a truck which was passing by. The person intersected the truck and called the local villagers. The matter would have been hushed up by the police had the villagers not been there. The police managed to take away all dead cow carcasses within minutes except one, which the villagers made a point to spread on the road. I mananged to take a few pictures and a video. Also attached is the news report on the matter.
There are dairies around Dwarka from where cows and buffaloes are slaughtered and taken daily, yet the government, police and municipal corporation keeps all eyes closed. Despite a huge protest there has been no arrests so far.
This has become a common trend not only in Dwarka but all over. And it is impossible to take cows like this unless the police is hand in glove with them. COW SLAUGHTER AND TRANSPORT HAPPENS IN DAYLIGHT IN DELHI.

Please write to the police commissioner of Delhi imploring him to take action against his officers indulging in this trade and to kakr this practice stop.
